Buy a tablet: for series, notes or as a notebook replacement, and which size fits
iPad or Android, 8 or 11 inches, with or without stylus and keyboard: which tablet suits your needs and what matters when buying.

Tablets are more specialized than smartphones and notebooks. If you mainly watch series and read, you need something different than someone who takes handwritten notes or takes the device along as a lightweight notebook replacement.
First the usage, then the size
- Series, reading, surfing on the sofa: 10 to 11 inches, good speakers, long battery life. An expensive device is not worth it here.
- Notes and sketches: Stylus support with low latency and a matte film or matte display. 11 inches is the minimum for handwriting in portrait mode.
- Notebook replacement: 11 to 13 inches, keyboard cover with touchpad, an operating system with true window view and USB-C for monitor and accessories.
- Children and car: 8 to 10 inches, robust case, parental controls and offline downloads more important than performance.
iPad or Android
Apple's tablets have the largest selection of apps optimized for large screens and the longest update support. Android tablets are cheaper, more flexible for file access, and Samsung devices are strong in stylus support and multitasking. With many cheap Android tablets, apps are only upscaled smartphone versions. Check update promises: for tablets newly launched in June 2025 onwards, the EU requires at least five years. For older models, two years is too little.
Display
For reading and notes, resolution matters; for films, contrast. An OLED display is impressive in a dark room; a bright LCD with good color reproduction works for most. Laminated displays without air gaps let the stylus write directly on the image—you notice this clearly when drawing. For sunlight, at least 500 nits.
Storage and connections
64 GB gets tight with offline series and a few games. 128 or 256 GB is comfortable; a memory card slot on Android is a cheap expansion. USB-C should be standard, ideally with DisplayPort output for monitor and hub. Mobile (5G) is only worth it if you don't want to share via smartphone when out and about.
Factor in accessories
Stylus and keyboard together often cost as much as a budget tablet. If you need both, compare the total price and watch for bundles. Third-party keyboards and styluses are usually cheaper on Android than on iPad.
What to watch for in deals
- Match the storage size in the offer with the model designation; price differences are large.
- For very cheap tablets, check: resolution below Full HD, 3 GB RAM and short update promises are deal-breakers.
- Last year's models often differ only in the processor.
