Buying advice
What matters first is how the appliance transfers its force to the food: a sturdy drive with metal gearing and a motor that does not noticeably bog down with stiff yeast dough or frozen ingredients lasts longer than wattage figures alone suggest. Second, look at speed control. Stepless adjustment, a pulse or interval mode and a soft start keep flour from dusting out of the bowl and ingredients from sticking to the sides. The third criterion is bowl and jug size relative to your household: a large bowl often handles small quantities poorly because the tools cannot reach them.
Simple blenders and hand mixers for occasional pureeing and stirring usually cost roughly between 30 and 80 euros. If you knead dough regularly or chop harder ingredients, solid food processors and stronger blenders are found at around 120 to 300 euros, often already with several attachments. Above that, roughly from 400 euros, the focus is on durable metal housings, quieter motors, a wide range of system accessories and models with a cooking function. These ranges are guide values and shift depending on features and timing.
You can spot a good deal when the price stays below the usual level over several weeks, not just below a crossed-out manufacturer recommendation. Previous-year models from established brands such as Bosch, Kenwood or Philips are often considerably cheaper and differ little technically from their successors. Discount phases cluster in November, around the turn of the year and before model changes in spring. Factor in follow-up costs: replacement blades, seals, extra bowls and special attachments can eat up the saving if they are expensive or hard to get.
What to look for
- Countertop blenders for smoothies and ice need plenty of power and a sturdy blade; for soups and sauces a hand blender is often enough.
- With food processors, the accessories matter as much as the wattage: a meat grinder, slicer/shredder attachment and second bowl aren't always included.
- Dishwasher-safe parts and a jug made of glass or Tritan save you time every day and don't take on odours.
