Buying advice
Start with the output power and the type of controls. For simple reheating and defrosting, roughly 700 to 800 watts of microwave power is enough; more watts mainly shortens cooking time for larger portions. Often more important than the raw number is how finely the power can be stepped: units with several levels and a usable weight-based defrost function help prevent hard edges while the centre is still cold. The second point is operation: rotary dials are robust and self-explanatory, while keypads offer automatic programmes that only pay off if you actually use them. Also look at the cavity, meaning whether the turntable suits your dishes and whether smooth surfaces are easy to wipe clean.
Simple solo microwaves without a grill usually cost around 70 to 130 euros and cover reheating, defrosting and drinks. For units with a grill, better build quality and finer control, plan on roughly 130 to 250 euros. Combination appliances with convection, inverter technology or a stainless steel cavity often start at about 250 euros and can go well beyond that depending on features. Built-in models are generally more expensive than comparable freestanding units, because you also pay for the fascia and frame. If you only reheat leftovers occasionally, the lower range already offers a solid appliance.
An offer is worth considering when the price is noticeably below the usual level of the past few weeks, not below a recommended retail price. Check the price history over several months, since microwaves often drop around November, at the turn of the year and during kitchen promotions in spring. Previous-year models from well-known manufacturers such as Samsung, Panasonic or Bosch are often considerably cheaper and differ little technically from the following generation. Factor in follow-up costs: accessories such as a grill rack or crisp plate, matching installation frames and, with built-in units, possibly adapting the niche. Also pay attention to the warranty period and the availability of spare parts.
What to look for
- Combi models with a grill or convection can replace a second oven in small households, but they cook more slowly than a full-size oven.
- Pick the cavity size to suit your household: around 20 litres is enough for one person, while families and large plates call for 25 to 30 litres.
- Built-in models have to fit the cabinet niche; freestanding ones need some clearance for ventilation.
