Buying advice
What matters most first is how long a router keeps receiving updates. Firmware security flaws affect your entire home network, so it pays to look at the manufacturer's update history and any stated support period. Second, consider the hardware behind the antennas: are there enough LAN ports for TV, console and desk, are there 2.5-gigabit connections, do you need DECT telephony or a USB port for network storage? Third, check the software. Guest networks, parental controls, schedules and VPN access are well implemented on some devices and only rudimentary on others, and that can rarely be added later.
For small flats and everyday browsing, simple devices are enough; they mostly cost around 60 to 120 euros. Solid routers with Wi-Fi 6, several LAN ports and a built-in modem often sit at roughly 150 to 250 euros, with models offering telephony towards the upper end. Mesh sets with two units often start at about 200 euros. Considerably more expensive devices with Wi-Fi 7 and multi-gigabit ports usually only pay off if your line and your devices can actually use that capacity.
You can spot a good deal by the price trend of recent months, not by the crossed-out recommended price. Previous-year models are often noticeably cheaper and barely weaker technically, as long as they still receive updates. Discounts cluster in November, around the turn of the year and when new generations appear. Also watch for follow-up costs: some manufacturers charge subscriptions for parental controls or security features, and repeaters or extra mesh nodes add to the bill later on.
What to look for
- Mesh systems spread the Wi-Fi across several devices and are worth it in large flats and houses with multiple floors.
- Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6E only help if your phone and laptop support the standard too; Wi-Fi 6 is enough for most households.
- Check your connection type before buying a router: DSL, cable and fibre need different modems.
