Buying advice
Light quality matters most. Check the colour rendering index (CRI 90 or higher looks more natural) and whether a bulb offers only white tones or colours as well. A wide, adjustable colour temperature range, roughly from warm white to daylight white, is often more useful day to day than colour effects. Second, look at dimming quality: cheaper models flicker at low levels or jump when dimming, while better ones adjust smoothly down to single-digit percentages. Third, check the socket, shape and luminous flux so the bulb fits your fixture and matches your previous brightness; lumen figures tell you more than wattage here.
Simple white Bluetooth bulbs usually cost around 8 to 15 euros each, colour versions often from about 15 to 25 euros. Branded bulbs from well-known suppliers such as Philips Hue or Nanoleaf frequently sit between roughly 20 and 60 euros depending on the version, with light strips and floor lamps clearly above that. For secondary rooms, simple models are generally enough. If you switch many bulbs at once, use scenes or want consistent colours across several lights, a mid-range system usually causes fewer headaches.
You can spot a good deal by comparing the price history of recent months rather than the crossed-out recommended price. Previous-year models are often reduced and differ only slightly in technical terms, as long as they still receive updates. Discounts tend to cluster around November, the turn of the year and whenever a series moves to a new generation. Factor in follow-up costs: some extra functions only work with a subscription, a bridge costs more, and if something fails you usually replace the whole bulb rather than just an illuminant.
What to look for
- Check the ecosystem: Matter-compatible bulbs can be controlled with Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa, others only via the manufacturer's app.
- A bridge makes many systems more reliable and automations run even without your phone; Bluetooth bulbs work without one, but can do less.
- Starter sets with a bridge and several bulbs are usually cheaper than buying the parts individually.
